1. Is fixed pricing or hourly rate better for emergency and preventative drain cleaning?
Compared to fixed pricing, hourly rate results in fairer pricing for consumers and, tradespeople are not paid for work they have not done.
This is because fixed pricing almost always allows for worst case scenarios for time required and materials used.
Hourly rate allows consumers to easily monitor the time tradesmen spend on site. Additionally, consumers have more rights to ask for the hourly rate charged, proof of hours worked, and materials used when the work is completed.
Accepting a fixed price contract removes the consumer’s right to a breakdown of charges once the work is completed.
Fixed pricing is for specific items of work. For example, Item 1- check and or clear gully trap on sewerage system $240.00, - Item 2 check and or clear 10m of 100mm sewerage pipe $100.00. If a sewerage system has 4 gully traps and its length is 60m the cost for a drain clean that should take an hour would be $1560.00. Whereas the drain clean done on hourly rate would likely be one third of that price if everything goes smoothly.
Fixed pricing can also be very deceptive as it is also used as a method to get a foot in the door and to quickly increase the overall cost of the tradespersons visit. For example, a tradesperson gives you a very attractive fixed price quote of $90.00 to unblock your toilet with a plunger. But the plunger does not clear your toilet. He does not charge you the original $90.00.
Instead, the tradesperson offers to use the drain camera for $150.00 to locate the cause of the blockage. The tradesperson then tells you that your drain is non-compliant because it is leaking where the tree roots have entered it. The tradesperson then insists that you cannot use a non-compliant sewer drain. The tradesperson then strongly recommends an expensive dig up at a cost of many thousands of dollars.
We can provide the best and fairest pricing to our customers because:
- We don’t come in with a ridiculously low price for drain cleaning. We rarely plunge sewer drains. We always try to clear the drain with an electric eel or water jet as this gives longer lasting results than plunging.
- We prefer to charge our customers an hourly rate as it has consistently proven cheaper for our customers and our customers always get a better job.
- Our customers are not charged for things that might go wrong but don’t always go wrong.
- We get paid for the work we have actually done and not for work we might have had to do if things went wrong.
- Compared to fixed pricing there are cost savings for our customers for jobs that are completed quickly.
The upside of fixed pricing is it allows consumers to budget for specific jobs, but fixed pricing comes with a lot of caveats and hidden up-selling opportunities for plumbers.
Same day service for your convenience health and safety
2. What are the health risks of sewage exposure?
Direct contact with any part of the body and breathing in sewage particles can cause minor and serious illnesses. Leaks from sewerage drains may not always be visible and can occur under timber floors and slabs and into gardens and lawn areas.
For this reason, Australian standards AS3500 requires all sewerage drains to be functioning and sealed.
We can keep you and your family members safe because:
- We offer all new and existing customers a genuine same day service if their blockage is causing or is about to cause a health risk or property damage.
- If for your own convenience you need same day drain cleaning services, we will do our best to meet your expectations. We will not leave you in the lurch. If we cannot make it to your home within the timeframe you require, we will be honest and let you know. We will even recommend an alternative reliable plumber.
- We value the community’s opinions, and we don’t want to get a bad reputation for doing bad work on sewerage drains that could leak and cause health risks.
No unnecessary and expensive drainage dig ups
3. Who is responsible for blocked sewer drains in Australia?
Homeowners are responsible for all blockages in their sewer pipes up to the boundary connection. In some council areas homeowners may even be responsible for blockages beyond the boundary up until the drain connects to the junction on the main sewer. Even if this drain crosses under another property or busy road. This is the rule for Queanbeyan NSW.
In Canberra where we are located, ICON Water is responsible for all blockages from the boundary connection (the Tie) up to the connection their sewerage network.
Australian standards AS3500 requires all sewerage drains to be functioning and sealed. This does not mean that you should be pressured into digging up and replacing your blocking or leaking sewer drains immediately.
We clear more drains with fewer expensive excavations because:
- Unlike other plumbing companies we do not see dollar signs when customer need the help of drain cleaning professionals.
- We have been unclogging and repairing drains in Canberra since 1991, giving us the required experience for the various types of drainage systems in Canberra and Queanbeyan.
- For many reasons and because we do not use fixed pricing, we can try harder than other plumbers to clear your blocked drains rather than dig them up.
- Over time we have accumulated and have utilised virtually every type of drain cleaning technology available, such as high-pressure water jetters, electric eels, augers, CCTV drain cameras, suction devices and chemical drain cleaners.
- Once we have cleared the blockages from your drain, we can assess it with a CCTV drain camera and give you guidance on how to avoid blockages in the future and inform you whether your drain is a health risk or not.
- We value your opinions and our reputation. It would not look good for us if we said your drains can’t be cleared and need to be excavated and then another plumber comes along and clears them.
If you have been told that your drainage systems cannot be cleared and needs to be urgently repaired by a drainer call us for a free second opinion. If we cannot unclog the drain there will be no charge to you. If we can unclog the drain you will only be charged our standard rate.
We do not pressure our customers into doing unnecessary work or to accept unrealistic quotes.
4. How to avoid high pressure sales tactics?
In our experience high pressure sales by plumbers are used to encourage consumers to make uninformed decisions that can drain them of a significant amounts of money.
For your sake for any plumbing and drainage repairs, don’t sign a contract or pay a deposit without considering it for at least 24 hours and,
If a plumber tells you that you need to act immediately or risk a fine or the price is going up tomorrow, if the plumber asks you to accept a quote immediately with a signature and large deposit or says that your or your home are in imminent danger, these should all be red flags that you should not agree to anything.
Get a second opinion from another licenced plumber drainer. Speak to friends, family members or the industry association that represents the specific trade.
Just don’t sign a contact or pay a deposit if you feel pressured.
Australian standards AS3500 requires all sewerage drains to be functioning and sealed. This does not mean that you should be pressured into immediately digging up and repairing sections of your clogged or leaking sewer drains.
- We will never pressure or rush any of our customers into making a decision because:
- Unlike some Canberra and Queanbeyan plumbers we receive thousands of calls for help for small and medium plumbing jobs every year. We also have a lot of repeat customers that use our drain cleaning services in Canberra and Queanbeyan. This means we have more than enough work to keep us busy and we don’t have to make more work for ourselves.
- We value the community’s opinion, and we don’t want to get a bad reputation for deception and overpricing.
- If you feel pressured by another plumber to commit to drainage repairs , call us we will happily give you a second opinion without charge.

Guarantees on plumbing work in Australia is 12 months. Some plumbers may extend their warranty to 5 years and some even longer. New plumbing work done as part of a building project may be limited to 2 years.
Stormwater drainage on new buildings is covered by the building code and warranties on stormwater drainage work may extend to the same length of time as the builder’s indemnity period.

- Local experience - owned and operating in Canberra since 1991
Finding a local tradesman is important and can save consumers a lot of money. For example: drainage regulations and drainage systems vary from state to state and even between local government areas. Drainage regulations, practices and technologies are always evolving too. Climate, soil and water conditions also determine the design and installation of local drainage systems.
6. How do I find a good local tradesman?
Check the business’ website to see if they are advertising in more than one city. If they are advertising in more than one city, it is likely the business is not locally owned. Check their reviews and ask people you trust. Check to see if they are members of a local industry association.
We are locally owned and operated in the Canberra region and Queabeyan since 1991
This is why you need a drainage company like 6 Star Hot Water & Plumbing, that is based in Canberra and is completely aware of the history of Canberra’s drainage regulations and practices.
7. How to spot fake reviews?
Fake reviews are typically very positive. They are not very detailed, they are repetitive, and they often appear all at once or in blocks with no history of prior reviews from the author.
Some reviews that are fake may be very negative also. These are used by businesses to harm their competitors.
We do pay for our reviews - Good and bad
Instead of paying our customers for their reviews for the drain cleaning work we do we give money directly to a charity for every review we receive.
None of our reviews are faked and we leave the bad reviews up for everyone to see. We can learn from our reviews about what drainage work we do well and where we can improve. When we get any review, good or bad we always respond respectfully.
While this may seem inconsequential for some, for us it keeps us honest and reminds us to be diligent in the quality of work we do, to be mindful of our charges and be respectful of our clients.
